Frequently Asked Questions Â
1. Â What is town justice court?
The town justice court is one of the State's oldest institutions, dating back to the 17th century. Formerly known as "justices of the peace", town justices once served the dual role as both local judges and councilmen on the Town Board. Although they no longer serve on the Town Board, our town justices continue a proud tradition of serving the community as local neighborhood judges with both civil and criminal jurisdiction. Town justice courts also serve as small claims court. The Town of Gardiner has two (2) town justices; each elected to serve a four-year term. While town justices are not required to be lawyers, they must complete extensive state training courses and fulfill continuing education requirements to preside in town court. The town justices are assisted by town court clerks and court officers. Town courts may also onduct jury trials in certain criminal and civil matters. The jury pool is comprised of town residents. Our current town justices are John E. Savago and Bruce D. Blatchly.
